- Mary grew up in Eastington, Ampney St. Peter, Gloucestershire. There is a tombstone to her father in Ampney St. Peters churchyard and his wife was a Miss Norton of Cirencester, they lived in a house on the corner by the church.
Mary had a sister Eliza, who married a Mr. Miller and they had a son, Captain Job Miller, who was killed in the Battle of the Somme in World War I, there being a commemorative brass plate to him in Ampney Church.
The Millers had another son, who lived in Ampney, a daughter Louise who married a Bank Manager and another daughter Ella who was in the Prison Nursing Service and is buried in Ampney. A third daughter Emily Mary, who lived in Margate. Mary had three other sisters and a brother: Maria, who lived at Kings Cote in the Cotswold; Annie who lived in Upton St. Leonards; Edith who went to Canada; and Stephen.
All the children attended a Bluecoat type school in Cirencester and stayed with their Grandmother Norton during the week in Cirencester.
